Yellow Star Review

I read this book with my two boys, ages 10 and 13. Although it is written as fiction because the details were not completely clear to the author, this book is based largely on the true story of the author's relative. As the story opens, the character is very young and her impressions are written as they would have been perceived at that age. By the book's conclusion, the character's experiences have matured with her age. The effect of the book is a clear look at the Holocaust through a child's eyes, complete with the innocence of her youth at first and learning and understanding more of what was in store for the Jewish people as time moves on. This is a great book for children in late elementary school or older. The subject matter cannot be easy but it is handled delicately.

Unacceptable! - Natallia Lishchenia - Seattle,WA
The book was absolutly unacceptable . I went online and tryed to figure out how to return it or how to complaine to Amazon.com , but there is no line "contact us" or "file a complaine". The book was dirty and had a black marker ALL OVER the book . It even had a stamp that it used to belong to jail !
I was very dissapointed and will never buy used books from Amazon.com again !

Great book that deals with horrible era - Suitemates Publishing - Syracuse, NY
This book is great for helping students to understand this horrible time in our history without graphic violence. I use it with my enrichment groups and they love it. It's written from Syvia's point of view and through her eyes. It gives children a viewpoint without being too macabre. The way it is written by Jennifer Roy is easy to understand with many metaphors and similes for teaching points. And there is even a teacher's guide that goes along with it on her website. Every time I read it I can't help but get sucked in to the time period and the horrible circumstances that were happening.

Good, but not great - CJ - MO - Missouri, USA
The story is inspirational, but the format will not appeal to all readers. If you (or your child) are expecting a traditional novel like I was, then "Yellow Star" may be disappointing.

The book consists of a series of poems put together to tell a story. The book is written using very simple word choices and does not offer many descriptive details. I didn't care for this style and would have preferred a more traditional narrative or even a diary-style for the story.
