Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U. S. Marshal (Exceptional Social Studies Titles for Intermediate Grades) Review

About the Book: Bass Reeves was a former slave who became a U.S. Deputy Marshal. He worked hard bringing in criminals and was respected and feared for three decades. His story may sound like a tall tale, but this is the life of Bass Reeves.

GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: Bad News for Outlaws is this year's Coretta Scott King Author Award winner. I'm so glad it won because not only do I think this book is incredibly deserving, but I'm not sure I would have come across it otherwise.

I don't know if I can express how much I loved this book. It's a picture book biography, but I think the subject and text make it perfect for tweens who might not typically be interested in non-fiction. It could also make a great introduction to biographies, as it really does read like a tall tale.

Vaunda Micheaux Nelson captures the voice of the old west perfectly and it was so wonderfully written. Ms. Nelson also includes many "western words" and includes a glossary of terms that readers might not recognize. I think this adds to the authenticity of the text. Bad News for Outlaws very much reads as though someone has just told you "come sit by the fire and I'll tell you a tale"-there is a distinct narrator throughout and I could hear that narrator in my head while reading.

Give this one to readers looking for a good hero story-they'll be thrilled. And I'm sure they'll add Bass Reeves to their hero list like I have after reading.

Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U. S. Marshal (Exceptional Social Studies Titles for Intermediate Grades) Overview

Sitting tall in the saddle, with a wide-brimmed black hat and twin Colt pistols on his belt, Bass Reeves seemed bigger than life. As a U.S. Marshal - and former slave who escaped to freedom in the Indian Territories - Bass was cunning and fearless.

When a lawbreaker heard Bass Reeves had his warrant, he knew it was the end of the trail, because Bass always got his man, dead or alive. He achieved all this in spite of whites who didn't like the notion of a black lawman.

For three decades, Bass was the most feared and respected lawman in the territories. He made more than 3,000 arrests, and though he was a crach shot and a quick draw, he only killed fourteen men in the line of duty. Bad News for Outlaws reveals the story of a remarkable African American hero of the Old West.

it's an eye opener - Earnest L. Gunn -
Bad News for Outlaws is educational and a great learning tool. Youth, and older folk like me, had no idea that this man existed. What a remarkable story. It should be required reading for American History of the Old West classes.

My Review - Virginia - Central Texas
This book was excellent! We (America as a nation) do not put enough emphasis on African American history. Our true jewels are the people that were brought over here as slaves. They were the ones that built this country on their own sweat, blood, and tears. We only hear negative comments about African Amercians. We don't hear enough about the scientists, inventors, and so forth. I don't have my book anymore because I'm going to share it with as many children as I can to let them know that they have a heritage to be proud of!

Bass Reeves - Against All Odds - M. Bruner - Oklahoma!
Bass Reeves was one bad brotha. He defied the odds by surviving slavery, immersed himself in Native American culture and learned to live on the land in Oklahoma. Even though Reeves couldn't read or write, Judge Isaac C. Parker hired him as a U.S. Deputy Marshal. Reeves took his job to heart and in his 32 year career became the most decorated marshal of his time. Take some time to gain knowledge about an American icon that just happens to be African American.

Nelson clearly demonstrates her love for this piece of history in this picture book. The story is reinforced with clearly defined `Western Words', timeline of events, further reading and websites, more about Judge Isaac C. Parker and Indian Territory, notes about the research to create the book and the authors love of western movies. BAD NEWS FOR OUTLAWS: THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF BASS REEVES, DEPUTY U. S. MARSHAL is more than a children's picture book - its history that springs to life. Even though I was introduced to Nelson and Bass Reeves during Black History Month this is a story that should be learned and told throughout the year. A must read about a true American hero.

Deputy Marshal - Catherine W. Hughes - Cambridge, MA
An outstanding U.S. Deputy Marshal, Bass Reeves, makes his mark as "a true champion of the American West." Deputy Marshal in Indian Territory, Bass Reeves brought law and order to the post Civil War West. Big and tall, Bass was a square shot, one who rounded up outlaws with surprising ease. Bass was one of the most respected and feared marshals in the land. Best suited for children ages 7-10, this picture book is full of stark illustrations and graphic accounts of violence. For these older children, however, this story tells the life and achievements of one heroic man.

Indian Children's Favourite Stories Review

My four-year-old son (and I) have learned so much about Hinduism -- religion and philosophy -- by reading this delightful book. This is a great gift for the Westernized Indian parent who wants to instill a bit of Indian culture in his/her child.

Indian Children's Favourite Stories Overview

This delightful collection of Indian folk tales-retold for an international audience-contains beautifully illustrated stories that provide an insight into the traditional culture and history of India. Retold here are the wonderful tales of how the Lord Krishna escapes the evil Kamsa's repeated attempts to kill him, and how the elephant keeper's daughter Rani humbles an unwise and unjust king by emptying his storehouses of rice.

Columbus Review

The D'Aulaires' give the child (and adult reader) a deep understanding of Columbus from the time of his youth through his old age. The details, like what the cover illustration means, draw children in and transforms Columbus from a name of a holiday to a flesh-and-blood man of discovery. If an era ever needed heroes of inspiration for young children, ours is it and the D'Aulaires' deliver.

Columbus Overview

As is their custom, the d'Aulaires have thoroughly researched their subject in order to provide the most historically accurate account of the life of the man Samuel Eliot Morrison called "the greatest mariner that ever lived." In their pursuit, the d'Aulaires traveled to Spain, Portugal, and the Caribbean Islands to research original documents on the life of Columbus. Their text reflects many little- known facts not generally included in the typical biographies of Columbus. Readers will learn that it was the saga of Leif Erickson that was one of the inspirations for Columbus's voyage to the East. They will also learn that Columbus was such a skilled astronomer that he knew the exact date when the next eclipse of the moon was and used that knowledge to his advantage. They will also learn that though "Columbus was a great man, he was not a modest man. He wanted too much, and so he did not get enough" (54). This book is lavishly illustrated with the d'Aulaire's detailed lithographs in four colors. 54pg

Outdated and historically inaccurate - Ashley McDonald - Florida
This book is reflective of the times in which it was written and contemporary readers may view it as racist with its stereotypical portrayals of Native Americans. One would expect a degree of fiction because there is little which is known about Columbus' early life, but the book is terribly inaccurate. A better choice is Christopher Columbus: Navigator to the New World from Isaac Asimov's Pioneers of Science and Exploration series.

We enjoyed this book very much. - Kaye Fink - Mansfield, TX
This book was used with my daughter's American History curriculum. It held her interest and provided her with more than just date recall. I will use it again with my other child.

Pyramid Review

Most everyone is fascinated with the Pyramids of ancient Egypt. The third in David Macaulay's series of books of how things in history were built uses both interesting text and black-and-white illustrations to tell about the process of building an ancient Egyptian pyramid. After explaining a little generally about life and death in ancient Egypt, the author takes us back to 2470 B. C. for the coronation of a new Pharaoh. Within two years, he must begin preparing for the end of his life and instructs his architect and best friend, Mahnud Hotep, to design his tomb. Though the pyramid and complex of surrounding temples and tombs in the story are imaginary, they are based closely on several of the pyramids and remnants of temples that were built in Egypt between 2700 and 2200 B. C. and are still standing.

Patterned after the pyramids of three earlier Pharaohs at Giza, the new pyramid would be built in three parts--the central core, the packing blocks, and the outer casing. All three parts were to be constructed simultaneously, one layer at a time. Most scholars agree that earth ramps were used in the construction process, but they differ as to where the ramps were placed. Macaulay included the two most popular theories in his visualizations. After the construction process is described in detail, the workers are still laying alabaster floor slabs when the Pharaoh dies in 2439, following a rule of 31 years ruling. The book then explains in detail the embalming, funeral, and burial. Any study of ancient Egypt will be greatly aided by the use of this book.
REVIEWED BY: Wayne S. Walker

Pyramid Overview

Through concise text and richly detailed black and white illustrations we come to know the philosophy of life and death in ancient Egypt.

Pyramid Specifications

When children catch their first glimpse of a pyramid, a sea of questions inevitably tumbles forth. "Why are they shaped like that?" "How were they made?" "Who made them?" "What were they used for?" Perplexed adults can sigh with relief now that David Macaulay has found a way to thoroughly answer all those deserving questions. His exquisitely crosshatched pen-and-ink illustrations frame the engaging fictional story of an ancient pharaoh who commissions a pyramid to be built for him. With great patience and respect for minute detail (not unlike the creators of the early pyramids), Macaulay explains the sometimes backbreaking tasks of planning, hauling, chiseling, digging, and hoisting that went into the construction of this awe-inspiring monument. Just when the narrative teeters on the edge of textbook doldrums, Macaulay brings us back to the engaging human drama of death and superstition. This respectful blending of architecture, history, and mysticism will certainly satiate pyramid-passionate children as well as their obliging parents. ALA Notable Book. Great Intro to Pyramid Construction - Peter A. Dotto - NC, USA
As with most Macaulay books, the strength is in his detailed designs. Excellent for gaining and keeping the attention of young readers as well as older folks. Illustartes pyramid construction through an engaging story. Highly recommended for shared reading for families.

Pyramid = mystery - Stephen Balbach - Ashton, MD United States
`Pyramid` (1975) is Macaulay's third book. It shows the building of a hypothetical pyramid similar in size to Giza. Unfortunately Macaulay took on a difficult subject. There is still controversy about how exactly the pyramids were built. The 4-ramp model shown in the book is just one of many ideas, and not even proven to work. The latest theory is described in Khufu: The Secrets Behind the Building of the Great Pyramid, involving a series of internal and external ramps (see a BBC article about it in the note below). Given this, it's hard to know what else in the book is accurate, or conjecture. Macaulay is at his best when he demystifies the world around us, but in this case the pyramids really are a mystery, and so it leaves the impression of inaccuracy. However we can probably assume some of it is right (the tools for example). Like all Maccaulay books, it's an enjoyable and impressive journey through history. Just don't rely on it as a blueprint for building your own pyramid!

Interesting, but not Macaulay's best - Jill Mayfield - San Antonio, Texas United States
Visual explanation of how Egyptians living nearly 4500 years ago were able to construct such large and magnificent structures. Shows the construction from conception by the Pharaoh's architect, to clearing and leveling the site, transporting the stones, tediously dragging them up and placing them to create the 124 layers of the pyramid, and finally chipping them down the form the distinctive triangular sides of the pyramid. Of course Macaulay goes further to show construction of the underground tombs, and nearby temples.

This book is not quite as interestsing as Mr. Macaulay's City book, but the subject matter was not as interesting either. Drawing men hauling stones up ramps doesn't compare to the richness of the Roman architecture and bustling city life.

Check Out Anne's House of Dreams for $14.95

Anne's House of Dreams Review

Anne's House of Dreams is the fifth book in L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series. The book begins with Anne and Gilbert's wedding at Green Gables, and chronicles the first few years of their lives together through happiness and hardship.

Despite the fact that Anne and Gilbert finally seem to get their happy ending in Anne's House of Dreams, some of the magic of the earlier books is lost in this novel. I can't really put my finger on any one thing and say, "that's it - that's where it went wrong," but something is definitely missing.

Anne, of course, is still Anne - a young woman with a enviable zest for life, who seems to touch the lives of everyone around her - but one thing has changed: she's forsaken her creative dreams for a set of different dreams. It was a switch from the Anne I've come to know and love, and I didn't really care for it. Montgomery has also created another fabulously eccentric cast of characters, but they don't seem as well-drawn as past characters.

Thankfully Montgomery's writing is still beautiful. She was a master of descriptive and lyrical fiction:
"The garret was a shadowy, suggestive, delightful place, as all garrets should be. Through the open window, by which Anne sat, blew the sweet, scented, sun-warm air of the August afternoon; outside, poplar boughs rustled and tossed in the wind; beyond them were the woods, where Lover's Lane wound it's enchanted path, and the old apple orchard, which still bore it's rosy harvests munificently." Can't you just picture it? The one thing that remains wonderful about this series is Montgomery's wonderful style of writing.

Although it is not my favorite, Anne's House of Dreams is still worth reading. This novel has lost a little of the "feel" of the earlier books, but still makes a good addition to Anne's story.

Anne's House of Dreams Overview

Anne's true love, Gilbert Blythe, has finally become a doctor, and in the old orchard, among their dearest friends, they are about to speak their vows. Soon the happy couple will be bound for a new life together and their own dream house, on the misty purple shores of Four Winds Harbor. Anne's House of Dreams - jayden robyn -
This is my definete favorite of "Anne of Green Gables." My favorite characaters were the Fords and Capt. Jim. Anne and Gilbert were great, too (who would have known that Anne married the person who called her 'carrots'?!). I liked the entire story-line, and it wasn't boring or pushed or anything. "Anne of Green Gables" is one of my favorite series.

Anne and Gilbert, Together At Last... - D. S. Thurlow - Alaska
"Anne's House of Dreams" is the fifth book in Lucy Maud Montgomery's superb "Anne of Green Gables" series. At long last, Anne and Gilbert return to Avonlea, she from three years as principal and teacher at Summerside, he from medical school, for a wedding among family and friends at Green Gables. They will begin their married life at the remote village of Glen St. Mary, in the seaside cottage that will become Anne's house of dreams.

In Glen St. Mary, Anne and Gilbert will make new friends: their beautiful but embittered neighbor Leslie Moore, the ancient lighthouse keeper and storyteller Captain Jim, and the abrasive but good-hearted spinster Cornelia Bryant. Anne's talent for deep friendships will be put to the test as the unique stories of each of her friends play out in "House of Dreams."

Anne and Gilbert will learn new roles, she as wife, housekeeper, and mother, he as husband, father, and as the new doctor in town. They will experience their first argument, over one of Gilbert's patients, and their first tragedy as a couple, regarding their first child. However, their love for each other will carry them, and the reader, to real joy in the life they will make together.

Thanks to Montgomery's superb prose and honest characterization, Anne is as irresistable in her newly married life as she has been in earlier books. "Anne's House of Dreams" is very highly recommended to her fans of all ages.

What I was looking for, exactly! - Donnetta Johnson -
I am so very, very pleased that the book that was sent to me is identical to the cover shown on the product page! When I was younger, I only got the first 4 books of the series, and have only held off on purchasing the final 4 until I could find the matching cover style. I am VERY pleased with the book, as it is precisely in the condition it was described to be, and have the cover art I was looking for!

Biased on Matters of Religion - A. K. Borenstadt -
This is a good book in many respects, but just know that it's very biased in matters of religion. It's *blatantly* anti-Catholic. Even if you aren't Catholic, I'd think you'd want your history writer to keep her opinions to herself.

I like that my kids are enthusiastic about learning about history. And i love the activity book for this too. Together it is the perfect way for my kids to learn about history.

We now love this series! I came across it in the library, but just reading it to my kids - they hated it! Then we got the supplemental activity book and it now is our favorite subject! Both books together really bring history alive. We have mumified a chicken, recreated a dinosaur dig, made a Greek vase, and so much more! My kids are now learning not only about history - but how to love history as well!!!
